Trusting God’s Protection

As I meditate on the scriptures, I am moved by the profound ways God demonstrates His loving protection and care for those He calls. “And the angel answered her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called holy-the Son of God.’ And Mary said, ‘My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.’”  Luke 1:35; 46-47  ESV. In Luke 1:35, the Holy Spirit envelops Mary, shielding her from the overwhelming power of God’s presence and preparing her for a sacred task. This scene draws a powerful parallel to the story of Moses in Exodus 33:18-23. Moses yearned to see God’s glory, but God in His compassion tucked Moses safely into the cleft of the rock, covering him with His hand to protect him from the fullness of His presence—a reminder that God’s holiness is always paired with mercy. Both Mary and Moses were chosen for extraordinary purposes, yet God ensured their safety, showing us that His presence, while awe-inspiring, is always accompanied by kindness and protection.

Mary’s calling was unique—she was favored not only for her role as the mother of Jesus but also for her heart. When the angel announced to Mary that she would bear the Son of God, she faced enormous risks: social disgrace, personal danger, and an uncertain future. Yet Mary’s response was not one of panic or fear. Instead, she turned her heart toward God in worship and praise, expressing unwavering faith and humble gratitude. Her willingness to embrace God’s plan, regardless of the cost or uncertainty, stands as a powerful example for us. Mary did not succumb to anxiety or self-pity; she trusted, worshipped, and proclaimed God’s greatness, modeling a faith that transcends circumstances.

Mary’s song of praise in Luke 1 is more than a reaction to her situation—it is a declaration of trust that reaches beyond the moment. In times of chaos or uncertainty, we can look to Mary’s example and find encouragement. Her response reminds us to anchor ourselves in God’s promises, to praise Him in all seasons, and to meet life’s challenges not with fear, but with faith and worship. Just as God protected Mary and Moses, He surrounds us with His love and provides security even when the world feels overwhelming. Reflecting on Mary’s song and the assurance found in Exodus 33 invites us to ground our faith in God’s steadfast love and share it with others throughout the year.
