Finding My Place At The Table
Throughout my life, the invitation to join in the Lord’s Supper (The Table) was always present—a sacred moment for believers to partake of the bread and cup together. Yet, I found myself unable to participate, not because I lacked faith, but because of a grape allergy. Though I became a believer at eleven, I watched from the sidelines for years, longing for the connection others seemed to experience. It wasn’t until my thirties that I was finally able to take part, thanks to a special cup prepared by my pastor. As I held that cup for the first time, tears streamed down my face. I was surrounded by others who moved through the familiar ritual, but for me, this was not just another ceremony—it was a deeply personal moment of joy.
“And when the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And He took a cup, and when He had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.” And likewise, the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with Me on the table. For the Son of Man goes as it had been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to this.” Luke 22:14-23 ESV
In that instant, I felt more than a participant; I felt welcomed, seen, and loved. For years, despite being a member of the body of Christ, I struggled with feelings of not belonging. Shame and doubt clouded my identity, making it difficult to accept my place at the table. But God’s invitation was persistent: “Come to the table and claim the identity I offer.” The Lord’s Supper became more than a ritual—it was a calling to replace my shame with the truth of who I am in Christ. Each time I partake, it is a reminder that I am accepted, valued, and called into community.
The joy of this experience is indescribable. It renews the calling I felt as a child—“Come, you have a seat here.” Only recently have I truly embraced that sense of belonging. Now, as I receive the elements, my joy is complete because my hope is rooted in my true identity. What once was a stumbling block has become a symbol of living water, cleansing my heart and mind and filling me with confident hope.
May I never take for granted the privilege to share in the Lord’s Supper. It is a gift—a reminder of God’s unending grace and love, and a celebration of the unity we have in Him.
- When have you experienced longing to belong, either in faith or community? How did God meet you in that moment?
- What barriers—physical, emotional, or spiritual—have kept you from fully participating in God’s invitation? How can you move toward healing?
- How can you extend an invitation to others who may feel left out or overlooked, helping them find their place at the table?
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your invitation to come to Your table. Thank You for making a place for me and for each one of Your children. Help me to remember the depth of Your love and the unity we share through the Lord’s Supper. Heal any shame or fear that keeps me from fully embracing my place in Your family. May Your living water cleanse and renew me. Guide me to welcome others, reflecting Your grace to those who feel left out. Let my life be a testament to the joy, hope, and belonging found in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
